Microlistics gives Bullet Express confidence to meet record demand

Established more than 30 years ago by partners David McCutcheon and Gary Smith, Glasgow-based Bullet Express started out with just two vans delivering around the UK. The business now operates from more than 450,000sq ft storage space and distributes more than 1000 pallets a day across its extensive network.

Over the past three years Bullet Express has been riding the wave of growth driven by demand from the pharmaceutical and e-commerce sector.

As a result, Bullet Express wanted a highly scalable Warehouse Management System (WMS) to grow with it.

The solution

Before implementing Microlistics WMS, Bullet Express was operating a stock control system. But the organisation was lacking efficiencies and overall visibility.
Bullet Express selected Microlistics’ Express WMS to provide its customers with full visibility of inventory, provide stock rotation and improve task efficiency.

Part of Bullet Express’ reason for selecting Microlistics was the speed of implementation and extensive local support.

Following substantial growth throughout 2020, Bullet Express had an urgent requirement to move into its new site on London Road, Glasgow.

For David, CEO at Bullet Express, having the support of Microlistics was critical in the expansion to the new facility. “We reached out to the Microlistics team as soon as we knew we had secured our new facility. Within a few days they were working on the project with us, and we got the new site up and running in 12 weeks,” David said.

Productivity boost

A key motivator in Bullet Express’ decision to implement Microlistics was its ability to deploy the software in only 30 days.

The WMS also enables Bullet Express to zone products and tag goods as fast moving or slow moving and then organise them accordingly in the warehouse.

“We can also allocate pallets of a certain height to a certain area of the warehouse. When you’ve got more than 200,000sq ft of space and seven separate warehouses, communicating to a forklift driver exactly where to place goods of a certain height has saved us a lot of time and money,” David said.

Furthermore, Bullet Express now picks and packs with RF technology. “One of the reasons we chose Microlistics is its strength to pick and pack in a very efficient manner.

We’ve switched from paper to RF picking and we’ve become a lot more efficient in that process,” David said.

With customers’ expectations rising around access to data and visibility, David said Microlistics has made the business far more efficient for its customers.

“It’s been fantastic to now have a quality WMS across our operations. We’re moving the information through our network far quicker now and this gives us the confidence to retain and win work over our competitors,” David said.

For David, this is just the beginning of Bullet Express’ growth and expansion plans and he is confident Microlistics will support the organisation in its ambitious future.

“We’re really starting to tap into the many benefits of the solution now. We picked Microlistics because we knew that it would be able to grow with us and it is now absolutely crucial to the future growth of our business,” David said.
