Symbol Technologies, a global leader in wireless and Internet-based mobile data transaction systems and services recently acquired the Telxon Corporation. By combining the strengths of these two companies', Symbol offers mobile computing systems and wireless data networks which enhance overall productivity and lower costs.

Telxon's range of RF terminals are reliable, robust and user-friendly. The two RF computers described below are being used in Nestle Malaysia's Distribution Centre.

PTC-960SL

The PTC-960SL packages the most advanced laser scanning and wireless communications technologies into an ergonomically-designed, single-handed solution. This rugged, go-anywhere portable terminal has been selected for Distribution Centre use throughout all industries.

The PTC-960SL is driven by a Microsoft® MS-DOS® operating system and powered by a removable Li-Ion or NiCd battery pack. Productivity-enhancing features include a non-shift, full alphanumeric keyboard, a 16-line by 21-character graphic LCD with operator controlled contrast and backlight, and automatic "power-on" activated by the scanning trigger.

An integrated direct sequence or frequency hopping radio provides robust wireless networking and supports client/server or terminal emulation applications. A built-in RS-232 port enables direct connection to portable and fixed station devices. Accessories include a fast charger for up to four battery packs and a single bay charging and communications cradle.

PTC-860IM

Telxon has packaged its proven wireless networking technology into an industrial strength mobile computer (shown on the right) designed to capture, process and communicate information from virtually anywhere in the mobile workplace.

The PTC-860IM is driven by a Microsoft® MS-DOS® operating system for ease of programming and application development. The 8-line vacuum fluorescent display ensures optimum readability in even the most difficult lighting conditions.

Large, ergonomically-designed keys enable optimum productivity even while wearing gloves. The PTC-860IM is compatible with Telxon's complete line of barcode reading devices providing "plug-in and scan" convenience for fast, accurate data input. An integrated direct sequence spread spectrum radio enables wireless networking and supports client/server or terminal emulation applications.

A rugged, NEMA-style case protects all critical components from harsh elements and everyday wear and tear. A heavy-duty mounting bracket secures the PTC-860IM in a wide range of mobile and fixed workstation application environments.
